Ignorance is bliss, until it’s about genetics

All it takes is a saliva sample
to know what you’re carrying

96 genetic risks
you never want to
know about

What is The96Screen?

The96Screen is a test that screens for 96 of the most commonly inherited genetic conditions.

Who is it for?

It is for anyone and everyone looking to start a family, or with a history of genetic conditions.

How does it work?

It’s one simple saliva test. Your saliva sample is then sent to our lab to undergo processing and testing. The samples are batched and results generally take 6 to 8 weeks after receipt.

The Process

What happens if I get a medium/high-risk result? *

Should you have a medium or high-risk result your report will be sent to a genetic counsellor for comprehensive feedback. The counsellors will inform you of the conditions identified, explain the risk and provide management options going forward such as the use of PGT-M in conjunction with IVF.

Should you prefer, your results can also be sent to your preferred health care practitioner for management and consultation.

* The report for medium/high risk results will only be sent to the client after they have received counselling from a medical professional.

Where can I do The96Screen?

Once you have signed and completed the relevant documentation and made payment, you’ll be provided with a booking option to one of our collection sites. Please note that we are currently expanding these collection offices as our footprint grows. For collections outside of the JHB area, we will arrange a courier at an additional fee of R330 incl. VAT.

Empowering people to take control of their reproductive health

We are all carriers of some genetic conditions. For some it might be an attached earlobe, but other conditions such as cystic fibrosis have the potential to be more severe. The96Screen is a test that identifies whether an individual carries a gene variant (a change in a gene) associated with a specific genetic disorder, even if they don’t exhibit symptoms of the condition themselves.

It is best to do it before starting a family. If both partners are carrying the same genetic condition, it reduces the risk of passing it to their child. Knowing your carrier status can help you make informed decisions about family planning. You may also consider the test if there’s a family history of genetic disorders.

The96Screen is recommended, as it covers the most common genetic conditions that people are carriers for, together with the highest risk and complications. Common conditions covered include, but is not limited to, Cystic Fibrosis, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Beta-Thalassaemia and Tay-Sachs. Our panel is guided by the recommendations of American College of Medical Geneticists (ACMG). Download the full list here.

It is a simple saliva test. The saliva sample is sent to our Lab to undergo processing and testing. The samples are batched, and results generally take 6 to 8 weeks after receipt.

If the results are low risk, you will be sent a personalised video with your results. If the results are medium to high risk, you will be contacted by a genetics counsellor to review your results, which is in line with ethical practice. FutureGen Labs will pay for the first one hour of genetic counselling.

Yes. Not all family history is as comprehensive as genetics, and in some cases the true illness in the family is not revealed due to stigma. Also, people can be carriers for conditions for many generations without having a partner with the same condition.

Knowing your results will help you understand the risk and make informed decisions about your health and family planning.

No. FutureGen Labs is submitting an application to cover the service via medical aid, but until it is approved, this is a cash only service. However, FutureGen Labs is offering payment plans via Peach payments for clients who cannot afford the screening upfront. Credit card facilities are also available via WalletDoc.

Once you have signed and completed the relevant documentation on our website DoThe96Screen.co.za and made payment, you can visit one of our collection sites.

The96Screen costs R7999 for an individual and R13499 for a couple testing together. The 600 expanded Screen costs R9999 for an individual and R14999 for a couple testing together. These costs are excluding the courier fee of R330 if testing outside of Johannesburg. Should one partner test first and then the other partner decides to test at a later stage, there will be an additional charge of R6999 or R8999, respectively. We also have a “buy now pay later” option one can use to help spread out the cost over a few months, if necessary.

FutureGen labs offers you flexible solutions. Should you wish to shorten the journey to finding out your results, the couples screen route will be faster. Should there be financial constraints, it is recommended to test the female partner first, and should there be an actionable result, perform testing on the male partner. This route though, does take longer.

The 600 panel is designed for people with rare familial variants and includes conditions that are not as common or necessarily as severe as those on The96Screen. You are more likely to find out you are a carrier for a genetic condition but the chances of finding a partner with the same condition is very minor, but not impossible. This test is only available for donor recipients or families with known rare diseases, whose medical practitioners advocate for them doing the expanded Screen.

Should you have a medium or high-risk result, which requires further action, then your report will be sent to a genetic counsellor for comprehensive feedback. The counsellors will inform you of the conditions identified, explain the risk and provide management options going forward such as the use of PGT-M in conjunction with IVF. Should you prefer, your results can also be sent to your preferred health care practitioner for management and consultation.
